Abstract: A philosophical meditation on personal identity, consciousness, birth and death. Beginning with childhood experiences of mortality and disappearance, the narrator recalls an enduring intuition that the self cannot be entirely explained by the conventional understanding of human existence as beginning at birth and ending with death. The text gradually develops a distinction between the socially and temporally defined self and another, more elusive dimension of identity. Through introspective prose and contemplative imagery, the author explores the limits of ordinary explanations of existence and the persistence of fundamental questions throughout human life.
