Jelly Monotype, Cyanotype, and Screen Printing for Emotional Expression and Mental Well-being

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This project explores the relationship between contemporary printmaking and personal emotional reflection through three manual processes: cyanotype, jelly monotype, and screen printing. Conducted at Black Hand Gang Printmaking Studio in Ubud, Bali, the study documents an individual creative process aimed at exploring the expressive potential of printmaking techniques rather than testing a formal therapeutic intervention. The project follows a four-stage creative things such as concept development, material and technical experimentation, production, and reflective evaluation. Drawing upon established perspectives on creative expression, the making process served as a practical space for processing academic tension. The resulting portfolio comprises a light-sensitive cyanotype series, a spontaneous jelly monotype collection utilizing natural textures, and a structured screen-printed coastal night landscape. Each technique contributed differently to the process: cyanotype encouraged patience with unpredictable ultraviolet exposure, jelly monotype enabled immediate tactile expression, and screen printing supported a controlled, methodical visual outcome. Rather than claiming measurable clinical outcomes or general psychological benefits, the study frames these observations as personal reflections on how physical art-making can accompany a transition from academic stress toward calm. Ultimately, the project contributes a practical reference for integrating tactile printmaking processes into studio-based art education.
