Abstract: Urban drainage channels frequently experience flow obstruction because plastic, cloth, leaves, packaging material and other solid waste accumulate at restricted sections of the drainage network. Conventional drainage maintenance is predominantly reactive, where workers or cleaning machines are deployed after substantial blockage has already occurred. Existing automated approaches mainly focus on blockage detection, screen cleaning, flushing or mechanical waste removal. This paper proposes a Hydraulic Self-Resetting Drain Blockage Escape Gate with Adaptive Waste Diversion, an integrated preventive drainage mechanism designed to divert accumulated solid waste before complete blockage occurs while maintaining a continuous hydraulic path for wastewater. The proposed system combines a coarse waste-guiding structure, hydraulic trigger chamber, self-resetting diversion gate, bypass water path, dewatering chamber, low-speed screw extractor and sensor-based monitoring unit. Unlike a continuously motor-driven gate, the primary diversion mechanism is designed to utilize the hydraulic condition created by increasing upstream water level and differential pressure. The gate automatically changes its position when a predefined hydraulic restriction is reached and returns to its normal position after the hydraulic condition is restored. Water is allowed to continue through a bypass path while larger solid waste is directed into a side chamber. A perforated dewatering basket separates water from solids, while a low-speed screw mechanism transports the collected waste into a sealed container. An ESP32-based monitoring unit can acquire water level, flow, differential pressure, gate position and motor-current data to determine blockage severity and verify system operation. The proposed methodology therefore changes the conventional drainage maintenance approach from reactive blockage removal to adaptive blockage prevention and controlled waste diversion. The concept is intended for prototype-scale experimental validation and further investigation for patentability.
