Vives, Erasmus, and the German–Speaking Book Market
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The following contribution examines the relationship between Juan Luis Vives and Erasmus of Rotterdam within the framework of the early modern book market. It highlights two interrelated aspects: Erasmus’s abrupt resentment and withdrawal from a previously close personal and intellectual friendship, and the resulting displacement of Vives from the entire German–language book market due to Erasmus’s dominant influence. This process, which was simultaneously an expression of the marginalisation of a rising competitor, becomes all the more evident as Vives’s works concurrently found significant resonance in other markets and, later, in Reformed circles, particularly in Zurich. The paper concludes that Vives’s defensive behaviour towards Erasmus demonstrates how persistence and diplomatic skill can overcome both personal resentments and dominant market positions, ultimately paving the way for long–term scholarly prestige.
