Risk Factors Associated with Consensual Sexting in Adolescents and Young Adults (2013–2025): A Systematic Review
Year: 2026
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Objective: Various forms of violence, such as cyberbullying and blackmail, are frequently associated with sexting, a practice that has been increasing among adolescents and young people. Therefore, this study aims to determine which risk factors are associated with consensual sexting in individuals aged 12 to 30 years. Methodology: A systematic review of the literature published between 2013 and 2025 was conducted. A total of 41 empirical articles that met the eligibility criteria were selected and analyzed, focusing on causes, motivations, and associated variables. Results: The findings indicate that consensual sexting is a multicausal phenomenon. Fifteen categories of risk factors were identified and grouped into four levels: individual (e.g., age, personality, personal needs); interpersonal (romantic relationships, social pressure, family background); sociocultural–digital (gender, technology, and culture); and risk–consequences (instrumental or aggravated reasons). Although most predictors are not exclusive to sexting, comparative studies suggest significant differences between adolescents and young adults, allowing the identification of specific risk profiles.
