Spatiotemporal analysis of climate variability, thunderstorm dynamics and hydrometeorological risks in Bangladesh’s Haor Basin

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the spatiotemporal climate variability, thunderstorm variability, and hydrometeorological risk in the Haor Basin of Bangladesh. NASA POWER monthly climate data for 2000–2024 and WWLLN monthly thunder-hour data for 2013–2024 were combined for the overlapping period from 2013 to 2024. GIS mapping, descriptive and seasonal statistics, raw and seasonality-adjusted correlations, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis, dependence-aware negative binomial regression, and autocorrelation-adjusted Mann-Kendall trend testing with Sen’s slope estimation were used for the analysis. Spatial variation is noticed in the results with higher rainfall and humidity and thunderstorms over Sunamganj and Sylhet portions of the basin. Increasing days of thunderstorms during pre-monsoon and early monsoon periods were very seasonal. The seasonality-adjusted results indicate that there is still a positive correlation between rainfall and relative humidity, and the direction and strength of other climate-thunderstorm relationships also vary with seasonal and district adjustments. There are no statistically significant long-term trends in the available periods for temperature, wind speed, and WWLLN-derived thunderstorm activity; increasing rainfall and relative humidity are suggested by trend analysis. The PCA and cluster analyses show high-level climatic gradients and similarity groups of districts that can be used for more localized adaptation planning. The study offers a basis for climate-thunderstorm evidence for climate-smart agriculture, lightning safety awareness, early warning, and disaster risk reduction at the district level in the Haor Basin.
