Balancing Global Consistency and Local Relevance: A Synthesis of International Marketing Strategy

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In an era of hyper-globalization, multinational enterprises (MNEs) face a fundamental strategic dilemma: whether to standardize their marketing mix to leverage economies of scale or to adapt their strategies to satisfy the unique requirements of local cultural environments. This paper reviews six decades of conceptual and empirical work on the standardization–adaptation debate, tracing its evolution from a binary choice to a contingency-based continuum. It examines how cultural distance, market maturity, industry characteristics, and firm-level capabilities shape the optimal degree of standardization across the four elements of the marketing mix (product, price, place, and promotion). Illustrative cases from consumer goods, food service, and retail show that the most successful firms standardize their strategic core while localizing tactical execution. The paper concludes with managerial implications and directions for future research, including the role of digital media and data analytics in enabling "mass customization" at global scale.
