Consideration of Mood Temperaments and Subthreshold Affective States in Opiate Use Disorder—A Primer
Year: 2026
Type: review
Abstract: The broad DSM heading of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders, including Opiate Use Disorder, has come under scrutiny over the past several decades by affective disorder researchers for the exclusion of the historical mood temperaments as missing factors for the evaluation and treatment of substance use disorders. The concepts of attenuated affective disturbances, aka sub-affective variants, for substance related disorders particularly Opiate Use Disorder will be reviewed and placed in a larger context of classic Manic-Depressive Illness of which Bipolar Disorder is a smaller subset. International clinical research will be highlighted. Pharmacologic treatment will be addressed.
