The Verification–Delegation Paradox: We Turn to AI Because We Cannot Verify, Yet Cannot Trust AI Without Verification
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: People do not necessarily consult artificial intelligence about matters they already understand. They turn to AI precisely because they face lengthy academic papers, unfamiliar statistical analyses, legal questions, or medical information that they cannot adequately process or evaluate themselves. The familiar advice to “verify AI-generated answers against the original sources” therefore appears reasonable but conceals a fundamental contradiction. The inability to perform that verification is often the very reason the task was delegated to AI. To trust AI, users must verify its judgments; yet they need AI because they cannot perform that verification. This is a paradox inherent in the delegation of cognitive judgment.
