Iatrogenic diethylene glycol poisoning in a herd of dairy cattle
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Diethylene glycol (DEG) poisoning is reported mainly in pets, with no previous reports in ruminants. This study describes a DEG poisoning outbreak affecting nine dairy cows in Minas Gerais, Brazil, following ingestion of contaminated drench administered during postpartum protocols. Clinical signs and biochemical analyses indicated severe renal injury. Necropsy revealed generalized petechiae, an enlarged liver with a nutmeg appearance, and pale kidneys with marked perirenal edema and multifocal petechiae. Histopathology confirmed renal tubular necrosis and degeneration. Laboratory analysis of the product, believed to contain propylene glycol, revealed that it consisted almost entirely of DEG.
