Multifunctional composite materials for integrated CO2 adsorption and catalytic transformation

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Global climate change necessitates innovative approaches to carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Traditional sequential processes, involving separate capture and conversion stages, often suffer from high energy penalties and operational complexities. This review highlights the emerging paradigm of multifunctional materials that simultaneously perform CO 2 adsorption and its catalytic transformation into valuable products. Recent advances in designing such integrated hybrid systems are comprehensively summarized, with emphasis placed on composite architectures based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double frameworks (LDFs), and MXenes. The review elucidates fundamental mechanisms where adsorption sites facilitate CO 2 pre-concentration and activation for subsequent catalytic reactions on integrated active centers. Key performance metrics, such as adsorption capacity, catalytic efficiency, product selectivity, and long-term stability under integrated conditions, are critically evaluated. Finally, current challenges and future research directions for developing highly efficient and scalable multifunctional adsorbents-catalysts are discussed, aiming to accelerate the development of sustainable CCU technologies.
