Developing bespoke isokinetic dynamometer protocols to replicate the functional demands of (p)rehabilitative screening tasks

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Strength is a primary and modifiable risk factor for injury. Isokinetic dynamometry is the gold standard measure of strength, providing autonomy in contractile modality, speed and range, but historically lacking in functional relevance. To develop bespoke isokinetic data collection protocols, biomechanical analysis of running gait and counter-movement jump performance was completed. Knee joint analysis in the sagittal plane revealed that only eccentric knee extensor strength was used in all tasks, with range and speed being task dependent. In contrast, concentric knee flexion was used only minimally. The majority of discrete contractile actions were within a range and speed achievable on most commercially available isokinetic dynamometers. The data presented in this study can inform functionally relevant isokinetic training and testing protocols. This same methodological approach might be used in more dynamic and sport-specific actions or using elite sporting or clinical populations to enhance the application and efficacy of isokinetic dynamometry.
