Beyond Laziness and Rebellion: Unseen Pubertal Transitions, Mental Health and Knowledge Assimilation Challenges Among Senior Secondary Students — A Teacher's Reflective Perspective from Nigeria

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper is a reflective perspective from a senior secondary school teacher in Ogun/Lagos State, Nigeria, based on general classroom observation. It explores why many students in senior secondary classes especially SS2 and SS3 show sudden changes in knowledge assimilation during puberty — a period often mislabeled as laziness, rebellion, or lack of ambition. Four interconnected factors are discussed: 1. Parental involvement limited to provision without emotional presence 2. Hormonal and mood changes related to ovulation and erections affecting concentration and decision-making 3. Teacher inexperience in adolescent psychology and sex education 4. Profit and result-driven school management focusing on high-performing students The paper does not contain identifiable data about any specific school, student, or teacher. No human subjects were involved, and no ethical clearance is required as it is a reflective educational commentary. It aims to contribute to discussions on adolescent development, teacher training and compassionate school leadership in the Nigerian context.
