Bioengineering to enhance progenitor cell therapeutics.

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases are an ever-growing epidemic in the Western world.1 Despite continued characterization of the underlying pathologic processes and the development of new treatment options that can attenuate disease progression and improve quality of life, the recovery of patients with cardiovascular disease often remains limited. Thus far, therapeutic strategies have sought to prevent or reduce tissue damage and subsequent functional deterioration. Because the endogenous capacity for self-repair is low, regenerative stem-cell–based therapeutic strategies have emerged as a promising option that may alleviate the socioeconomic burden of cardiovascular disease.2,3
