Abstract: Cognitive linguistics is a multi-faceted enterprise, combining more syntactic-conceptual approaches with more semantic-conceptual ones. In the former, metaphor is downplayed, in the latter it is ever further exploited. But also the traditional syntactic-semantic approach is very vigorous; only it could profit by more input from the metaphorical drive. These different tendencies are exhibited in various analyses of phrasal verbs.
