Abstract: A complex linguistic dynamic is emerging in Montréal, yet most of the research on language in Québec relieson census statistics or survey data, leaving many questionsunanswered. Specifically, what are young Montréalers whoare increasingly bilingual and multilingual actually doing withlanguages as they move through the city and how do they perceive traditional conceptions of language and identity? To answer these questions, a non-static ethnographic approach wasdesigned, following 15 multilinguals through their daily livesacross sites and networks. Participants collaborated in analysisthrough discussion and reflection on the verbatim and texts collected. The findings reveal a complex portrait of language inMontréal, challenging current ways of thinking about languageand doing research.
