Abstract: The object of this study is to provide a linguistic profile of the Senegalese speech community and of the speakers' attitudes toward the various languages spoken in that country.After giving the geo- graphical location of Senegal and a brief historical account of the im- pact of the French colonial linguistic policies in the country (which partly explains the present sociolinguistic situation in Senegal), the linguistic characteristics of the Senegalese speech community are described and the attitudes of speakers towards their own and other languages are discussed.
