Abstract: The main aims of this report are to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of \nthe Irish adult population who were experiencing symptoms of psychological distress \nor who had reported mental health problems in the previous year. In addition, the \nreport describes primary care service use for mental health problems and secondary \nmental health services use over a one-year period. The findings were extrapolated to \nthe general population and set against other available data relating to mental health \nservice use in Ireland. This information is the most comprehensive to date on the \nextent of psychological distress and mental health problems in Ireland and the use of \nservices by people seeking help with these problems.
