Abstract: In the hundreds of books and papers published on what today we call foreign, second or L2 acquisition we can find numberless references to terms such as communicative methodology, communicative activities or communicative teaching. The history of foreign language teaching shows that the objective of any L2 teaching method has always been communication. However, it is at least paradoxical that after "25 centuries of language teaching", the adjective "communicative" has only been used in recent years to refer to the theory, the contents and the activities that shape a teaching method of which the objective is communication among human beings. The communicative approach comes up from the following statement: the study of grammatical forms and structures is not enough to be able to communicate in a foreign language; it is not enough to develop a communicative competence in the target language. This paper deals with the theoretical bases of the communicave approach, the notion of communicative competence, the theory and content, and the methodological corpus (the how) proposed to achieve the desired aims.
