Palaeomagnetic analyses of calcified deposits from the Plio-Pleistocene hominid site of Kromdraai, South Africa
Year: 2002
Type: article
Abstract: Paleomagnetic data are presented \nfor a set of orientated cores from a talus \ncone at Kromdraai B, a South African \ncave deposit associated with early Pleistocene \nfauna including important hominid remains \nof Paranthropus Australophitecus) robustus. \nPolarity interpretations of calcified sediments \nand flowstones suggest that the cave deposits \ninclude episodes of deposition that span \nthe Olduvai Event of the Matuyama chron. \nResults suggest that matrix of the kind associated \nwith the type specimen of robustus (TM \n1517) corresponds closely to the beginning of \nthe Olduvai Event, c. 1.9 Myr ago
