Abstract: This report is designed to provide staff in the UK's country conservation agencies with a summary of scientific thinking and technical information about peat bog ecosystems. It is a source of information which should, for example, prove useful when preparing site citations, drawing up management plans, preparing cases for site protection, and for a range of other activities where some additional explanation or technical back up can be of assistance. It is a personal view of published studies and current thinking about mire ecology, a subject on which it is difficult to obtain a consensus.
