Molecular regulation of skeletal muscle thermogenesis
Description: Narrative: The long-term regulation of body mass and adiposity is dependent upon the balance of energy intake and energy expenditure. During the development of obesity, energy intact is greater than expenditure resulting in increased adiposity until a new steady-state balance is achieved. Current therapies to reduce weight such as diet decrease energy intake but for a variety of physiologic reasons has not proven successful. However, increasing energy expenditure is a potential viable option but current studies have primarily focused on brown and beige adipocyte activation. We have uncovered a role for a metabolic enzyme termed TIGAR that functions at the neuromuscular junction to regulate skeletal muscle contraction and heat production through the induction of increased cholinergic tone.
