Nonpersistent chemical exposure, placental development, and maternal pre- and post-pregnancy cardiovascular health
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy such as preeclampsia, eclampsia, and gestational hypertension are increasingly common in the United States and pose potentially serious risks to both mothers and babies, raising the likelihood of adverse birth outcomes and later cardiovascular disease in women. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are often linked to abnormal placental function, and recent research suggests that environmental chemicals found in plastics and personal care products may influence factors that affect placental development. This project will be the first to examine how exposure to these ubiquitous environmental chemicals may affect the placenta during pregnancy and women’s own cardiovascular health both before and after pregnancy.
