Distributed Open and Timed Systems
Description: The scientific context of the DOTS project is that of formal specification, verification and design of information systems. Complex systems, such as embedded systems that are widely used nowadays, are often (1) distributed – composed of several components that communicate together –, (2) timed – contain timing constraints, – and (3) open – interact with their environment. Each of these aspects considered separately is now relatively well understood and corresponds to an active research area. The big challenge is to deal with systems which present several of these features. The DOTS project associates researchers specialized in all three aspects mentioned above, in order to tackle problems that emerge when considering several features simultaneously. We plan to significantly advance the theory as well as the algorithms for the design and verification of distributed, open and timed systems. In addition to model checking, the DOTS project will mainly address two important verification problems : control (how to supervise a given system in order to satisfy a given specification ?) and non-interference (how to ensure secrecy – ie how to avoid leaking information – in a given information system?). For addressing the verification of these systems, we plan to use (1) games to cope with interactive aspects and (2) partial orders to deal with the distributed aspect. Each of these two promising techniques has already proved its relevance for formal verification, the choice of these two approaches (and their combination) constitutes an important characteristic of the DOTS project. And bringing together specialists in both of them and in timed systems is a crucial aspect of our project.
