Cell type signaling specificity of the neurodevelopmental disease-associated DYRK1A kinase
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Loss-of-function mutations in the DYRK1A gene have been tightly linked to neurodevelopmental disorders like autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disability. The research described in this proposal aims to uncover the specific mechanisms by which DYRK1A influences the function of immature neural stem and progenitor cells in the developing brain and their commitment to specific neural identities. The results of our studies will identify potential therapeutic entry points for neurodevelopmental disorders by defining intracellular signaling pathways regulated by DYRK1A that can be modulated to restore normal brain function.
