Future-proof and trustworthy remote electronic voting
Description: This project studies potential applications of new technologies in the domain of remote electronic voting, their effects and prospective problem mitigation strategies. The problem setting is very much motivated by the need to enhance the Estonian Internet voting system in accordance to the ever-changing threat and opportunity landscape. First, we will be studying the options for extending the usage of zero-knowledge proofs in the context of the IVXV Internet voting system. The main aim of this subtopic is mitigating the attacks relying on the submission of incorrectly formatted votes. Second, we will improve post-quantum resistance of the current electronic voting protocols against the threats posed by the emergence of quantum computers as quantum computers can be expected to break most of the currently used asymmetric cryptographic primitives. Third, we will be studying the social trust issues and environmental impact of Internet voting.
