Sirtuin -Dependent Regulation of Tuberculosis and HIV Interactions in Macrophages
Description: NARRATIVE Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death in mankind due to infections, and more than 8 million new cases occur each year with 1.2 million deaths per year. Coinfection with HIV-1 has rendered the control of tuberculosis very difficult, and we have discovered a new method of augmenting host defense so that both M. tuberculosis which causes tuberculosis and HIV-1 which causes AIDS can be controlled using a new class of Sirtuin-based drugs. We propose to develop a new intervention using immunotherapy to simultaneously control HIV-TB coinfections.
