The fundamental logic of fine-scale connectivity in the developing cortex

Description: Our brains are ready to interact with the environment from the moment we are born. For example, babies can see immediately after birth and recognize faces soon thereafter. This is made possible because nerve cells are wired into functional networks even before birth. However, the exact logic by which neurons become connected has been unknown. Here, we used the latest microscopy technologies to unravel this logic in the mouse brain. We found that neurons get connected through "dendritic domains" that will most likely become the computational subunits of the brain for processing visual inputs when the eyes open.
