Hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) for human livers - a prospective randomized European Liver Transplant Trial
Description:
This randomized controlled phase 3 trial is the first to investigate the impact of hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) on cumulative complications within a 12-months period after liver transplantation. We randomized livers donated after brain death to compare conventional cold storage with cold storage plus HOPE. The results demonstrate that the number of patients with at least one Clavien >=III complication was not significantly different between groups. We propose, however, potential beneficial effects of HOPE on the quantity of complications per patient, based on the finding that the application of HOPE led to fewer severe liver graft related complications, and to a lower risk of liver related graft loss.
