Beyond conventional zeolite catalysis
Description: Zeolites are the most important industrial catalysts, but fail in controlling the location of active sites and in chiral catalysis. Here, we aim at synthesizing both active and selective catalysts with defined active sites and chiral zeolite catalysts. For this purpose, we will use two-dimensional zeolites with large external surface areas and well-defined locations and concentrations of silanol groups as building blocks to add active heteroatoms to interlayer spaces and to immobilize chiral organocatalysts with organic linkers for covalent bonding to the surface. Because the chiral organocatalysts will be located on the external surface of zeolites, steric hindrance will not restrict substrate size or transition states. Prepared zeolitic materials will be used to catalyze enantioselective single bond-forming reactions and multiple bond-forming cascade processes. Moreover, these novel immobilized catalysts may also be applicable in flow reaction systems. The scope of the zeolites will be further expanded by synthesis of polymer-coated zeolites for Pickering interfacial catalysis.
