Deer Mice as Tools for Infectious Disease Research

Description: Hantaviruses can cause fatal diseases in humans, including hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). Sin Nombre virus, is hosted by the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) and causes most HCPS cases in North American, while Andes virus, hosted by the long-tailed pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus), causes most HCPS cases in South America. This project will examine how deer mice fail to clear Sin Nombre virus but clear Andes virus.
