Examination of Functional Subpopulations in the Islet of Langerhans Using Optogenetics

Description: Project Narrative Islet dysfunction is the underlying cause of diabetes. The pancreatic islet is an electrically coupled system and needs to be studied as close to its native environment. My research will use light-controlled electrical activity (optogenetics) to understand the effects of electrical coupling within the islet on its function. Better understanding of islet dysfunction in diabetes and testing what methods can restore islet function will be important to develop new therapeutics to treat and prevent diabetes.
