Elevated Temperature Properties of Beryllium

Year: 1952
Type: report
Abstract: For The Atomic Energy Commission -7/ GoChief, Qeclossificotioo Brunch^,-The elevated temperature tensile properties of hot-pressed QMV beryllium have been studied from 250-950°C.Also those of warm-pressed, hot-extruded beryllium have been in vestigated from 250-600°C.Both materials exhibit a ductility peak at about 450°C while tensile strength decreases with increasing temperature. The results are compared with data reported in the literature on extruded flake and extruded cast beryllium.Special equipment developed for tensile testing beryllium up to 950°C is illustrated and described. PURPOSEThe purpose of this work was largely to investigate the action of beryllium metal under deformation in the temperature ranges which are used for fabrication. These are 350-475°C, the so-called "warm" working range, and 900 -1150°C, the hot working range. The entire tem perature range is being surveyed also for the purpose of investigating the possibility of fabri cating at the recrystallization temperatures, or 750 -900°C, as well as providing information on the elevated temperature structural properties of beryllium. At the present time no pub lished work is available on the elevated temperature properties of beryllium fabricated by powder metallurgical techniques.
