Abstract: A review is given of currently used methods of measuring and controlling decarburization, and present knowledge on the effect of decarburization on the mechanical properties of ultrahigh-strength steels is described. Data indicate that a small controlled amount of decarburization is beneficial from the standpoint of resistance to brittle fracture. On the other hand, decarburization appears to lower the fatigue strength of steels. It is concluded that for any given application, the relative importance of these two factors should be evaluated before a decision is made regarding the control of decarburization. (P.C.H.)
