Abstract: Throughout a lifetime the heart beats up to three billion times. Every contraction-relaxation cycle consumes 300 mg of ATP (1). About one-fourth of the energy consumption is for calcium transport across the membranes. Thus, to support these processes, our heart’s consumption may total 20 wagons fully loaded with ATP.
