Abstract: We have developed a new concept hydrogen production system based on the membrane reformer, which is a steam reformer of natural gas equipped with palladium membranes. Palladium, which allows only hydrogen to pass through, is fabricated into membranes and used in the reformer for direct production of high-purity hydrogen. With the new concept of simultaneous generation and separation of hydrogen, the membrane reformer can be made compact, offers higher efficiency and requires less installation space than the conventional ones. In the present study, with the aim of developing a practical system, we have manufactured and tested a membrane reformer with a rated hydrogen production capacity of 40 Nm^3/h, focusing on improvement of energy efficiency to produce hydrogen and durability of the reformer.
