The Development and Distribution of Dieldrin Resistance in Banana Weevil Borer, Cosmopolites Sordidus Germar (coleoptera: Curculionidae) in New South Wales

Year: 1975
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Dieldrin has been used in New South Wales to control Cosmopolites sordidus, banana weevil borer, since 1956. In 1968 control failure was recorded in plantations near Mullumbimby and resistance was diagnosed. The distribution of resistance has been monitored since 1969 using a discriminating dose of 1 μl of 1% dieldrin in kerosene and resistant weevils were detected in 241 of the 548 samples tested. Resistance was widespread in the Brunswick River district by 1970 and is now widespread in the Tweed River district. Resistant weevils were also detected in a number of localities in the Richmond River district, but not in the important banana areas around Coffs Harbour and Nambucca.
