Abstract: The oscillatory long-time tail of the velocity autocorrelation function observed in liquid sodium and rubidium is traced back to a singularity in the spectrum of longitudinal waves emitted by the moving particle. Therefore Schiff's conclusion (1969) that the oscillatory long-time tail is due to the soft-core character of the interparticle potential implies that the same property of the potential is responsible for the long lifetime of short-wavelength density waves in liquid metals.
