Abstract: J. Schmitz — On and about Al-Hajj Umar Taal: Holy War and the Tijaniyya in West Africa. Modem research on West African Islam has shown the importance of local Arabie scholarship in the genesis of political movements centering on legal or legitimate jihad. A synthetic survey of several recent books on the Tijaniyya brotherhood and its leading family, the Taal, sheds a meaningful light upon the dynamics of the political/scholarly network up to and over the colonial period.
