Spatial, spectral, temporal, and statistical characterization of scattering from elastic shells in a fluid
Year: 1990
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: The scattering strength of a rigid object in a fluid is a mild function of its shape and acoustic size (kd, where d is some characteristic dimension). On the other hand, the scattering strength of a closed air-filled elastic shell of the same shape often exhibits much more rapid variations over a very large dynamic range. No single value or sparse set of measurements or calculations can adequately describe the scattering strength of such an object. The construction of a complete scattering signature for a highly elastic scatterer therefore imposes a requirement for high resolution and large data sets, whether they are obtained experimentally or by computation. The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate several practical means to construct and display spatial, spectral, temporal, and statistical descriptions of elastic scatterers.
