Abstract: The powder mixtures of Cu–Al2O3 and mutually insoluble Cu–C were ball-milled in air or in argon atmosphere to produce Cu–Al–O or Cu–C cermets. The behavior of mechanical alloying has been investigated in relation with the phase evolution, the crystal refinement and the oxidation during milling. Amorphous and nanocrystalline phases were formed by mechanical alloying. The addition of graphite to metal powders improved considerably the milling efficiency as compared to metal-metal systems. The mechanically alloyed powders were sintered or hot-consolidated at various temperatures to examine the sinterability, the thermal stability and the microstructures. The preliminary results of the present works showed that the mechanical alloying can be used as an effective method for producing novel cermets having homogeneous and well-controlled microstructure.
