Type: article
Abstract: The “reliability” of Evliya Çelebi’s information has been a focus of inquiry over the 200-year history of research on the Seyahatnâme. Questions have been raised as to whether he actually visited certain of the cities and saw certain of the monuments described in the work, and what accounts for the incorrect information regarding distances, times and numbers. To date, researchers have established many interesting errors as well as many interesting and surprising facts in the Seyahatnâme. These researches have shed light, not only on whether the information it contains is correct or not, but also on the unique character of the work. This article draws attention to some of the interesting errors and surprising facts, and evaluates Evliya’s eyewitness account of the Tree of Hippocrates on the island of Cos, which today has been taken under protection as a natural monument.
