Abstract: The secretion product ejected from the defence glands of the whip-scorpion Typopeltis crucifer was studied by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The fluid consists of 86% acetic acid, 12% water and 2% caprylic acid. This comes very close to the secretion product of the American whip-scorpion Mastigoproctus giganteus.
