Abstract: In the imaginative universe of western populations, the symbolic changes from nature to culture are often ensured by hybrid and exceptional, though incomplete, characters with elements of both universes. This ethnographic study proves that this belief is not a simple "cliché": these mediators really do exist. How can one explain the "institutionalised" presence at the limits of the forest of men marked by mutilations and endowed with a kind of talent for communication with the wild world ?
