Abstract: The study aimed to determine the effect of scarification and soaking in potassium nitrate on breaking of tanjung seed dormancy and to know the best treatment combination of all treatments tested. The study also aimed to determine the breaking of food reserves (free fatty acid) and respiration in seed germination process. The experiment was conducted on June 2011 to November 2011 in the Seed Technology Laboratory and Greenhouse Banguntapan Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.Research using 2x5 factorial design and added with one control treatment arranged in completely randomized design, repeated 4 times. The first factor was scarification treatment that consists of injured seed coat and no injured seed coat. The second factor was chemical treatment that consists of soaking potassium nitrate with a concentration of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%.Control treatment was done by soaking the seeds in water with no seed coat injured.Breaking of food reserves (free fatty acid) and respiration were evaluated through germinate 70 tanjung seeds, with 3 replications, statistical analysis was done using two means hypothesis test.Parameters observed in factorial experiment were 50 seed weight, moisture content, environmental temperature, percent germination, vigor index, hypothetical vigor index, respiration and the percentage of free fatty acid content.Data were analyzed using variance analysis followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test with α = 5%.While data of % FFA (Free Fatty Acid) were analyzed using two mean hypothesis test. The results showed that the average speed of germination treatments (combination of scarification and KNO3) 42.6 days earlier than the control, and showed 75.3% germination percentage. The best combination treatment was without scarification with potassium nitrate concentration of 0.5% and 0.4% that could accelerate seed germination 63.75 and 47.75 days earlier comparing to the control, respectively.
