Abstract: This paper reports the results of a reaction-time experiment measuring the reading time for sentences with various structures, preceded by a context sentence. The target sentences had two forms, related by transformations (Passive, Adverb Preposing, There Insertion, Raising to Subject, Raising to Object). These rules change word order or grammatical relations. The transformed version, with a less perspicuous structure, is harder to process than the untransformed, in a neutral context.Reaction time decreases if the context mentions the subject and topic of the sentence.
