"Neither community is going anywhere": indirect impacts of revitalization on the homeless

Year: 2009
Type: article
Abstract: The hyper-marginalized status of the homeless makes them \nparticularly vulnerable to processes of urban restructuring, including \nDowntown renewal. Downtown Los Angeles is a focal \npoint of homelessness and urban revitalization. Within this \ncontext, I examine some of the effects of revitalization on the \nhomeless using Los Angeles' Skid Row as a case study. Through \na series of interviews with individuals involved in, or impacted \nby, Downtown redevelopment, this research identifies some of \nthe indirect impacts of revitalization on the homeless. I explore \nvarious stakeholders' perceptions and reactions as homelessness \nand revitalization intersect and I present their thoughts \non how revitalization can be made more equitable for those \ninvolved. I conclude that understanding the subtle and indirect \nimpacts of revitalization on homelessness can contribute \nto our knowledge of these two contemporary urban processes. \nKey words: revitalization, homelessness, Los Angeles.
