Abstract: This paper describes a case of granular cell tumor of the esophagus removed and diagnosed by endoscopic polypectomy. A 59-year-old man complaining of general fatigue was found having a tumor of the esophagus by X-ray examination of the digestive system at elsewhere and was admitted to the hospital. Gastrointestinal series showed a 17×10mm elevated lesion with a regular edge and sharply demarcated margin at anterior wall of the abdominal portion of the esophagus. Endoscopy disclosed a Yamada III elevated lesion above the EG-junction. From biopsy a diagnosis of granular cell tumor was made. Endoscopic ultrasonography demonstrated a hypoechoic mass with almost homogenous internal echo in the subrmucosa. The tumor was removed with endoscopic polypectomy. In a review of the literature, a total of 82 cases of granular cell tumor of the esophagus were seen. The disease was commonly found in men in their forties or fifties. The half the patients were asymptomatic. The granular cell tumors often occurred in the lower esophagus. These tumors less than 25mm in diameter were treated with endoscopic polypectomy. On the whole, surgical treatment for the tumor has been decreasingly performed.
