Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a study of the costs of changing to the use of the just-in-time method of production. These findings result from collaborative work with three UK manufacturing organisations, none of which is a Japanese subsidiary.A conceptual model of the process of change to just-in-time manufacturing is presented and examples of the costs that are likely to be incurred at each stage of the change process are described. The purpose of the conceptual model and detailed study of the costs is to assist the planning and the financial management of changing to JIT manufacturing in a batch production environment.
