Abstract: Resumo : Este trabalho pretende fazer uma apresentacao do conteudo filosofico de De institutione Musica , de Boecio. Grande parte do seu conteudo e tecnico e nao sera diretamente discutido. Assim, tratar-se-a dos seguintes problemas: a musica enquanto ciencia e o papel dos sentidos e da razao na mesma; a divisao da musica em tres generos – musica mundana, humana e instrumental; o ethos musical e o papel moral e pedagogico da musica. Analisa-se ainda a funcao da musica no mais celebre texto de Boecio, A Consolacao da Filosofia . Palavras-chave : De institutione musica, Boecio, filosofia da musica. -- Abstract : The aim of this paper is to present the philosophical content of Boethius’ De institutione Musica . A large portion of the aforementioned work is very much of technical nature and will not be directly discussed in the present paper. Hence, I shall turn my attention to the following issues: music as science and the role of the senses and of reason in it; the division of music in three genres – cosmic, human and instrumental music; the ethos of music and the moral and pedagogic roles of music. I shall also address to and discuss on the role of music in Boethius’ most renowned opus, The Consolation of Philosophy .
